Obama on Race and Context

"But I did want to just talk a little bit about context and how people have responded to it and how people are feeling.


You know, when Trayvon Martin was first shot I said that this could have been my son. Another way of saying that is Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago. And when you think about why, in the African American community at least, there’s a lot of pain around what happened here, I think it’s important to recognize that the African American community is looking at this issue through a set of experiences and a history that doesn’t go away.

There are very few African American men in this country who haven't had the experience of being followed when they were shopping in a department store. That includes me. There are very few African American men who haven't had the experience of walking across the street and hearing the locks click on the doors of cars. That happens to me — at least before I was a senator. There are very few African Americans who haven't had the experience of getting on an elevator and a woman clutching her purse nervously and holding her breath until she had a chance to get off. That happens often.
And I don't want to exaggerate this, but those sets of experiences inform how the African American community interprets what happened one night in Florida. And it’s inescapable for people to bring those experiences to bear. The African American community is also knowledgeable that there is a history of racial disparities in the application of our criminal laws — everything from the death penalty to enforcement of our drug laws. And that ends up having an impact in terms of how people interpret the case.

Now, this isn't to say that the African American community is naïve about the fact that African American young men are disproportionately involved in the criminal justice system; that they’re disproportionately both victims and perpetrators of violence. It’s not to make excuses for that fact — although black folks do interpret the reasons for that in a historical context. They understand that some of the violence that takes place in poor black neighborhoods around the country is born out of a very violent past in this country, and that the poverty and dysfunction that we see in those communities can be traced to a very difficult history.

And so the fact that sometimes that’s unacknowledged adds to the frustration. And the fact that a lot of African American boys are painted with a broad brush and the excuse is given, well, there are these statistics out there that show that African American boys are more violent — using that as an excuse to then see sons treated differently causes pain.

I think the African American community is also not naïve in understanding that, statistically, somebody like Trayvon Martin was statistically more likely to be shot by a peer than he was by somebody else.nSo folks understand the challenges that exist for African American boys. But they get frustrated, I think, if they feel that there’s no context for it and that context is being denied"

"One of the most damning words in the American academy is to be described as controversial. What should be the essence of scholarship has become a critique of scholarship, which is bizarre to me. Completely. The student experience is a tough one. You are judged constantly by the very people who teach you, and these are the very people who tell you that you should learn to think for yourself and think free of consequences. Yet the consequences are right there – there is the exam, and marking, and there are the risks you must take if you deviate from what the professor thinks, whether it’s a right-wing professor, a left-wing professor or a centrist professor. There is a cost of deviation. So between the language, the rhetoric and the reality there is a huge gulf. And the student knows it better than anybody else. In a way, the student is being made to to conform – to not say that which he or she thinks if it deviates from the norm. So we’re turning out kind of a group of mercenaries. It’s always a question for me: How do you deal with this catch-22? Tangazo la Vodacom na Hatma ya Elimu Tanzania


Hivi tangazo linaloonesha mwalimu anafundisha halafu mwanafunzi anashangilia kupata ujumbe wa simu linatuma ujumbe gani kwa jamii?

DAN:
Wanafunzi (hasa wa sekondari na vyuo) ni kundi linalogombaniwa sana na makampuni ya simu. Kuna kampuni moja ambayo iliwashika wanafunzi na vijana mapema tangu 2004/2005 kwa kuwawezesha kupiga simu bure muda wa usiku baina ya mtumiaji mmoja wa mtandao huo na mwingine. Hata mimi wakati huo nilinunua card yao kwa sababu iliniwezesha kuwasiliana kwa garama nafuu sana. Nimekua na namba hiyo kwa miaka 8 sasa mbali na ukweli kuwa karibuni huduma zao zimekua duni na za gharama ni kubwa kuliko nilipojiunga. Siku hizi wananikata fedha hadi 5000 bila maelezo ya kueleweka. Na masiliano huwa mabaya mara nyingi. WAMENIHODHI. Nashindwa kuwahama maana namba yangu ni muhimu sana na ninayo moja tuu.

Wakati huo,hiyo kampuni husika ilijua kundi la wanafunzi liko katika kipindi cha MPITO. Hivyo lilitukopesha. Sasa wengi wetu limetuhodhi  na linatupora tuu. Na hiyo mbinu ilijenga ushawishi mkubwa kwa vijana wengi kununua kadi zao na hadi leo wamejikuta wanakuwa watu wazima na wamebaki nazo.

Naona kampuni nyingine zimegundua hiyo monopoly ya kampuni `niliyoitaja` hapo juu hivyo zinajaribu kuwavuta wanafunzi na vijana zaidi.  Hii ni vita ya mafahari,nyasi lazima ziumie.

Kwa mantiki hii,lengo katika tangazo tajwa ni zaidi ya hilo la bahati na sibu. Ni uthibitisho wa huo ushindani wa kutaka kuhodhi kundi la wanafunzi na vijana kwa manufaa ya kibiashara. Nia ya kutengeneza faida hapo haijali ujumbe/tafsiri ama ushawishi hasi unaoweza  kutokana na tangazo hilo. Atakayeponzwa nalo,hilo ni kosa lake. Shauri yake. Hiyo ndiyo neo-liberal ethic.

They are so many alternative moral na ethical channels to tap the market they are targeting.

Tukiruhusu competition za kubomoa maadili kama hizi ziendelee sipati picha itakuwaje.

Waache hii ni wrong marketing campaign,hasa hasa wakati huu ambako maadili na elimu vimeporomoka sana (in my opinion).

Imagine then baadaye they come forward and donate books.....!!

Napata jibu kwamba huyo mwanafunzi aliyeshinda angeadhibiwa vikali sana ikiwa ni pamoja na kufukuzwa shule.

Taswira ninayoipata katika darasa hili LA kwenye tangazo ni kwamba mwalimu anafundisha huku wanafunzi wanachat kwenye simu zao za viganjani ndo maana mmoja wao aliweza kubaini kwamba ameshinda na kwa midadi isiyo ya kawaida anaruka kwa sauti huku darasa zima likimuona mwenye bahati maishaini mwake. BINAFSI NACHUKUA WASAHA HUU KULAHANI MATANGAZO YA AINA HII KATIKA VYOMBO VYA HABARI.

Kama kawaida angalia hata tangazo la coca cola wakati dunia inahofu na majanga au inawaza juu ya kitu fulani Afrika inabirudika na coke, Africa haiwazi. Na tangazo hilo ni yaleyale tu, yapo mengi sana ya ubaguzi wa rangi,  matabaka nk . Ndipo tulipofikia.

Inamaanisha watoto wadogo wanakuwa na simu na huzitumia akiwa darasani. Hii ni kweli. Wazazi walichangamkie. Ukimuuliza mtoto atakuambia uongo-kaikota huko nje, alikuwa akijibana ukimpa hela ya nauli akanunua sm (mpunguzie nauli ni nyingi hela umpayo) etc. Wanafunzi wengine vibaka huibia sm watu; wengine huibia hela wazazi wao. Ukimtuma nyama kilo 2 ananunua moja na nusi au mbili kasorobo. Umtumacho-hupunguza ili akuibie hela (usiwatume kununua bulky items hata vijana wakubwa, kanunue mwenyewe bajeti ya familia). Ukizubaa home-anakuchomoa hela ukiisaka anasema hajui hajaiona kumbe ipo mfukoni kwake ili naye apate simu. Mradi sasa dunia imeharibika. Kuharibika mpaka kampuni sa sm kujisahau kuweka matangazo hayo. Ila shule nyingine-sm inatumika kuunganisha na video system kufanya masomo/kufundishia. Tuchague lipi linatufaa.

Hii inaonyesha jinsi gani tumeweka mbele Hela za kubahatisha na kupenda njia za mkato.

Linapaswa kukemewa na kufutwa ikizingatiwa tunapiga kelele vijana wanaenda shule madarasa na majengo hayatoshi ila cha kushangaza mwaka huu kidato cha tano madarasa na mabweni ndio yamekosa wakukaa eti,hakuna wanafunzi wanaofuzu.

I see! Kumbe macho ya wanazuoni yanafanana sana! Siku mbili zilizopita hili tangazo lilinifikirisha sana hasa pale wanafunzi wanapomjibu mwalimu kuwa ..."ulikuwa umemaliza" wakati alikatishwa kwa kelele za aliyekuwa akishangilia kuwa ameshinda. Pengine linaakisi hali halisi iliyopo mashuleni na namna wanafunzi wa leo wanavyoichukulia elimu.

CHAGGAMA:
Labda voda washitakiwe kwa corrupt public morals.
Unlike cultural/tribal values/morals or religious institutions shule zinatengeneza coporate morals at an inclusivistic sense. Hivyo basi Watoto humtazama mwalimu kama role model which inadvertently corrupts public morals.
Labda mjadala huu utawafikia waalimu/ serikali na makampuni za simu.
